MIRA Digital Twins Platform

Tool description

MIRA is a Digital Twin platform that allows cities to build virtual replicas of urban environments using real-time data from sensors, open sources, and other tools. These replicas help simulate various scenarios, such as infrastructure upgrades or climate actions, enabling planners and decision-makers to optimize urban systems and policies.

Within the UP2030 project, MIRA goes beyond traditional simulations by integrating energy systems renovation, photovoltaic (PV) installations, mobility, and energy storage. It allows users to visualize urban areas, predict future energy demand, and assess the potential greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction through intuitive dashboards and visualizations.

MIRA can also act as a hub, connecting and displaying data and insights from other tools in the project’s digital twin bundle.

Objectives

  • Model cities at different scales: neighborhoods, cities, regions
  • Collect and monitor real-time data
  • Identify urban risks and inefficiencies
  • Predict behavioral and systemic changes
  • Optimize urban performance through simulation

Expected Impact

  • Comprehensive urban monitoring: City-wide monitoring of environmental footprint
  • Smarter mobility management: Urban transport optimization and congestion detection
  • Integrated urban services: A unified platform for visualizing services like parking, emissions, and mobility
  • Climate-forward planning: Informed planning for carbon neutrality and energy transition
  • Inclusive digital transformation: Supporting a Just Transition by improving open data access and reducing barriers for stakeholder

How the tool supports cities' pathways towards climate action?

In Istanbul, MIRA supports the city's goals toward carbon neutrality by enabling simulations and data analysis focused on decarbonizing buildings and transport, integrating photovoltaics and energy efficiency measures, planning for climate resilience and inclusive mobility, and reducing financial and technical barriers to the energy transition. As part of the digital twin bundle, MIRA also strengthens the prototype phase by visualizing and analyzing outputs from other tools. It empowers stakeholders to engage with complex datasets through an accessible interface, supporting smarter, cross-sectoral decision-making and fostering more effective collaboration across the urban planning ecosystem.
