Exploring Urban Climate Strategies:

Highlights from Primavera R 2025 with UCCRN in Barcelona

Date: 9–11 April 2025
Location: Barcelona, Spain

Earlier this spring, the Primavera R Intensive Training on Climate Urbanism Implementation Strategies gathered urban planners, researchers, and local practitioners for a dynamic three-day programme focused on advancing climate-responsive urban transformation. The training offered a space to share innovative tools, real-world case studies, and strategies that align climate action with inclusive and sustainable urban development.

As part of the UP2030 network, we are pleased to highlight the participation of our partner, the Urban Climate Change Research Network (UCCRN), and the valuable insights shared during the event.

A Key Contribution from UCCRN

One of the standout sessions was led by Dr. Mattia Leone, Professor at the University of Naples Federico II and Co-Director of the UCCRN European Hub. Dr. Leone conducted a workshop titled:

"Urban Design Climate Workshop – Methods & Tools for Climate-Resilient Urban Transformation"

In this hands-on session, participants were introduced to cutting-edge methods that UCCRN has developed and applied globally since 2015. These methods aim to bridge research and practice by helping cities:

  • Integrate carbon neutrality, climate adaptation, and well-being into urban design

  • Use GIS and 3D modeling to visualize microclimates, socio-economic contexts, and alternative urban futures

  • Apply collaborative mapping and co-design tools to align community insights with data-driven decisions

  • Identify climate synergies that shape more resilient, adaptive, and inclusive urban environments

Field Visit: Climate Itineraries in Cornella de Llobregat

The training also included a field visit to the “Climate Itineraries Cornella de Llobregat”, a local initiative developed in close collaboration with the Municipality of Cornella. This project offers a practical, on-the-ground example of how cities can implement climate-sensitive planning approaches that engage communities while addressing environmental and social challenges.
