B-WaterSmart Risk Assessment Tool for Urban Water Reuse

Tool description

The Risk Assessment Tool for Urban Water Reuse was developed under the H2020 B-WaterSmart project (Accelerating Water Smartness in Coastal Europe and beyond). Designed as proprietary software, the Risk Assessment Tool implements a user-friendly risk assessment framework for water reuse in non-potable purposes. The human health and environmental (groundwater and surface water) risk assessment methodology is based on the relevant ISO standards (especially, ISO 31000:2018, ISO 20426:2018, and ISO 16075-2:2020) and the Regulation (EU) 2020/741 on minimum requirements for water reuse. Its mission is to assist city authorities responsible for non-potable water uses by guiding the user through the inherently complex context of health and environmental risk guidelines.

Objectives

  • User-friendly tool for risk assessment and management.
  • Clear and comprehensive risk description, assessment, and treatment.
  • Support decision-making with evidence-based risk assessment.
  • Facilitate the risk communication to the population at risk via the scenario-building process.

Expected Impact

  • Make available expert knowledge: Guides risk managers and stakeholders responsible for non-potable water use in case of water reuse.
  • Cross-sectoral collaboration: Strengthens collaboration across departments and stakeholders.
  • Support the often-complex process of licensing urban non-potable water reuse projects.

How the tool supports cities' pathways towards climate action?

In Lisbon, the BWS Risk Assessment Tool is being implemented to assess and manage risk regarding water reuse in irrigation of sports fields with artificial turfgrass. Key contributions include assisting city authorities in overcoming barriers related to circular economy practice already in place; supporting the development of risk management plans for the safe use of reclaimed water as an alternative water source; informing how pilot actions contribute to citywide scaling efforts; and strengthening stakeholder communication.
