Lisbon Launches Guide for Sustainable and Climate-Neutral Events

On 17 September 2025, Lisbon City Council presented its new Guide for Sustainable and Climate-Neutral Events, a practical resource to support cultural, sports, community, and institutional organizers in delivering events that are more responsible, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable.

The guidelines represent an upscale of the sustainability requirements piloted in 2024 during events in Alvalade, including:

  • Hora do Planeta at the Alvalade Market

  • Festas de Santo António at São Miguel Rugby Club

  • Christmas Markets on Avenida da Igreja

All of these were promoted by the Alvalade Parish and demonstrated how it was possible to move from proposal to action, and from the neighbourhood to the city.

A step towards a Municipal Seal

The Guide marks the first step towards creating a Municipal Seal for Sustainable and Climate-Neutral Events, reinforcing Lisbon’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.

Aligned with Lisbon’s prototype — developed with the support of the UP2030 project’s expertise and tools — the Guide ensures that even temporary activities such as festivals, fairs, and sports events contribute to the city’s long-term climate-neutrality goals.

With this new initiative, Lisbon is positioning itself as a frontrunner in ensuring that local traditions, culture, and community celebrations can thrive in harmony with the city’s sustainability commitments.
