Typology is a method used to categorise entities according to shared characteristics. The UP2030 Urban Typologies classify European NUTS-3 regions based on features related to urban planning, climate change mitigation, and adaptation. By grouping European cities and regions with similar attributes, the Urban Typologies aim to support these areas in identifying relevant strategies for achieving climate neutrality and resilience.
The UP2030 project has developed four distinct Urban Typologies, each grouping NUTS-3 regions based on similarities in specific characteristics.
The typology supports cities on their pathway to climate action by helping them understand which cluster they belong to and what this means for their specific challenges and opportunities. By grouping regions with similar characteristics, it allows cities to identify peers facing comparable climate risks and planning constraints. This enables more targeted knowledge-sharing, joint learning, and collaboration on effective climate solutions. The typology also provides an evidence-based starting point for assessing local needs and prioritizing action areas that are most relevant for each cluster. By highlighting shared barriers and potential solutions, it guides cities in expanding and refining their climate strategies. Additionally, it supports decision-makers in identifying where mitigation and adaptation efforts should be focused to advance progress towards climate neutrality and resilience. Overall, the typology helps cities move from general ambition to tailored, cluster-specific action that accelerates their climate transition.
